Computer storage technology entered a new phase in 2026. With PCIe 5.0 becoming increasingly common in mid-to-high-end PCs, the industry has now begun preparing for PCIe 6.0 SSDs.
PCIe 6.0 is capable of data transfer speeds of up to 64 GT/s per lane—twice as fast as PCIe 5.0. The technology utilizes PAM4 signaling and mechanisms such as FEC to ensure data integrity at high speeds.
Companies like Micron and Samsung already have PCIe 6.0 SSDs, while controller manufacturers such as Phison, Marvell, and Silicon Motion are developing their own platforms.
At Computex 2026, Phison showcased its PCIe 6.0 X3 controller, which is claimed to achieve sequential read/write speeds of approximately 28 GB/s and up to 6.8 million IOPS. Mass production of the controller is expected to begin following the sampling phase in late 2026.
However, home PC users do not necessarily require such high-speed SSDs; for gaming and everyday tasks, PCIe 4.0 or PCIe 5.0 SSDs are already sufficiently fast.
The development of PCIe 6.0 is primarily attracting interest from the workstation, server, AI, and computing sectors, where massive data transfers are required.
